The area surrounding Portland is known as the Discovery Coast and it is home to some amazing natural attractions, including: the Cape Nelson National Park, Cobboboonee National Park Mt Eccles National Park, Lower Glenelg National Park, BudjBim National Park, Mt Richmond National Park, Discovery Bay Marine National Park and the Bridgewater blow holes. There are also a variety of walks in the area, from the Fawthrop Lagoon walk to Smelter Nature Walk.

Beaches

Located on the coast, there are a number of beaches in the Portland area for visitors to explore when the weather is warm. Nun’s Beach is the perfect swimming spot and also has picnic areas complete with BBQs. Dutton Beach is great for kids who want to paddle and also offers access for launching small dinghy’s and jet skis. Henty Bay offers another child friendly beach with BBQs and a playground. It’s also where Portland’s Navy Cadets are based.

Whale Watching

Opening onto the Southern Ocean waters means that Portland is a year round whale watching destination. From May to October you are likely to see Southern Right Whales – popular viewing spots include out on the breakwater, on the cliff top overlooking the bay and Cape Bridgewater Bay. From November to May you are likely to see Blue Whales – popular viewing spots include the viewing platforms at Cape Nelson Lightstation and the blowholes.

Art & Culture

Those who are more interested in the regions art and cultural attractions will not be disappointed. The Portland Arts Centre displays 12 exhibitions a year, the majority of which focus on talented artists from around the region. Other attractions include the Portland Cable Tram (with 4 sessions per day), History House (which is home to many objects from the shire’s Cultural Collection), Maritime Discovery Centre, and Powerhouse Car Museum.

Local Produce

The region is home to some delicious produce and wine that you have to sample at least once during your stay. Head to Portland Strawberries to try fresh strawberries straight from the farm. From November to April, you have the opportunity to pick your own. At Arrow Fisheries, you can try some fish or calamari, freshly caught that morning. Some of the popular wineries in the area include Barretts Winery, Bochara Wines and Suffoir.

Events

The region is also home to a number of events throughout the year. Some of the more popular include the Wood Wine and Roses festival, Kelpie Muster, Bonney Upwelling Festival, Mouth 2 Mouth (a walk, run and carnival), Tyrendarra Rodeo and the Winter Solstice Fun Run. Local markets are a common feature – check out the Saturday Fresh Market (4th Saturday of each month), Heywood Food Swap (last Friday of each month) and Portland Community Market.
