Many old preserved features of the park can be viewed by appointment with gold detecting demonstrations, gold panning, a visit to the ‘Gold Stamper Battery’, an original gold mine, and the working Eucalyptus Stew Pot for manufacturing Blue Mallee Eucalyptus Oil.

Visit the Wedderburn Historical Society Rooms in town and view carefully maintained photos and collections of local families, events and gold mining history or take a self-guided local tour and discover heritage architecture, abandoned digging sites of the gold rush era and the unique ‘Lonely Grave’ site of Thomas Whyte and his story of mining in Wedderburn.

Arts & Culture

The Coach House Art Gallery and Museum is situated in Wedderburn’s main street. The museum is housed within an old general store built in 1913, with gold display, carriages and blacksmith shop also housed within the complex.

Parks & Reserves

Wedderburn is a short effortless trip to many beautiful bushland parks and reserves. The Jacka Park Soldiers Memorial is a centrally located local park with marble statue dedicated to the local resident Albert Jacka, a recipient of the Victoria Cross in World War One.

Wychitella Flora and Fauna Reserve surrounds the Wedderburn precinct and is home to precious local wildlife, including 12 threatened species. Prospecting is a popular activity and permissible in areas of the reserve.

Goldrush Attractions

The regional city of Bendigo is under 1 hour from Wedderburn, an attractive tourist destination continuing along the goldrush era theme. Tour the Central Deborah Gold Mine, an authentic gold mine adventure in the deepest underground mine tour in Australia. Or relax on the Victorian Goldfield’s Railway, a historic steam train experience that runs directly through the states Goldfield’s Region.

Back in Wedderburn, prospecting for gold has undertaken a recent resurgence in popularity due to the recent discovery of a 2kg gold nugget. Utilise the local reserves and parks or participate in the Minelab Wedderburn Detector Jamboree, an annual two day event with gold panning and detector demonstrations and a range of activities suitable for all ages.

Bushwalking

Those seeking an adventure in the great outdoors will enjoy the range of bushwalks available near Wedderburn. Trek across the trails of Mount Korong, at 364 metres above sea level it cuts a commanding figure in the local landscape and provides uninterrupted views of the surrounding countryside and big open skies.

The Kooyoora State Park, set on an enormous 11,350 hectares, has layers of diverse landscapes and vegetation amongst the scraggly shapes of majestic box ironbark forest, with opportunities for sightseeing, picnics, walking trails and camping. There are a number of walks to enjoy, the most favoured is Melville Caves Walking Track, a 1km track commencing at the Melville Caves Picnic Area and Southern Lookout Trail offering up the best views of the park.
