Attractions

The good news is that the Wagon Wheel Motel and Units is your perfect base for exploring all that the area has to offer. Whilst there are plenty of attractions and things to do in the local area, we’ve outlined some of our favourites below.

Nature

Want to get outside and breathe in the fresh air? There is no better place to do this than Coonabarabran! Check out the Pilliga Forest (which comprises the Pilliga Nature Reserve, Timmallallie National Park, Pilliga West, and East State Conservation Areas) and give the Sandstone Caves walking track whilst you’re there. Explore the Warrumbungle National Park – Whitegum Lookout offers some stunning views of the park, or join the school holiday discovery program.

Heritage & Culture

If you want to learn more about our country or the Coonabarabran region itself, we recommend heading to the Australian Museum Diprotodon Exhibition at the Visitor Information Centre (where you can see the bones of this massive marsupial), the Woodpecker Gun (a war memorial for those who served in World War II), Crystal Kingdom (home to one of the world’s most unique mineral collections) and Pilliga Pottery (view and purchase beautiful pottery creations).

Night Sky

Have you always had a fascination with the night sky? So do the people of Coonabarabran. The area is home to three observatories – Milroy Observatory (home to the largest telescope in Australia open for public viewing), Warrumbungle Observatory and Side Spring Observatory (home to Australia’s largest optical telescopes). Here you will also find the world’s largest virtual solar system drive, which is on the way to the Side Spring Observatory.

Adventure

If adventure sports is more your thing, you should head to the Goanna Tracks Motocross and Enduro Complex. Here you can enjoy all styles of Motocross, Supercross, Enduro, Endurocross, FMX, ATVs and Trials. The complex also caters for all sorts of riders, from junior and beginner through to experienced, and all tracks have been built according to national standards. Please note that the track may be closed on competition weekends.

Day Trips

If you feel that you’ve exhausted all of the things to do in Coonabarabran, why not take a day trip to one of the nearby towns? Drive 40 minutes to Baradine to visit the Pillaga Forest Discovery Centre or Sculptures in the Scrub walking track, drive an hour and 15 minutes to Coolah to see Pandoras Pass or the Pandora Gallery, or drive an hour to Mendooran to check out the Black Gate Distillery or wander the murals painted throughout the town.

Events

The Coonabarabran region is also host to a number of events throughout the year that we highly recommend checking out if you happen to be in town. Some of the more popular events include: StarFest (held on the October long weekend at the Sliding Spring Observatory), Coonabarabran Agricultural Show (held across 4 days in March each year), Bunny Bazaar (held on Easter Saturday each year) and Tour de Warrumbungles Weekend of Cycling.
