Attractions

When staying at the Mayfield Motel, you’ll be pleased to learn that there are plenty of nearby attractions and activities to keep you amused – whether you’re staying the night, the weekend or a little longer.

Heritage

The region has a rich history just waiting for you to discover it. Some of our favourite locations include: the Newcastle Ocean Baths, Miss Porter’s House (built in 1909), Newcastle Museum, Newcastle Town Hall (still in use today for council chambers and community gatherings), Fort Scratchley Historic Site, Christ Church Cathedral and the Lock Up Cultural Centre. The Minmi Cemetery Walk is also a charming and fascinating piece of local history.

Nature

Whether your love of nature lies inland or on the coast, Newcastle has plenty to enjoy. In particular, we recommend: the Bogey Hole (an outdoor pool carved from the rock by convicts in the 1800’s), Glenrock State Conservation Area, Dixon Park Beach, Blue Gum Hills Regional Park (which also houses a maze and play equipment), Newcastle Beach, Merewether Beach, Stockton Sandspit, Nobbys Beach, King Edward Park and the Heritage Walking Track.

Art & Culture

If you’re more interested in the art and culture of the region, you won’t be disappointed. Visit the Newcastle Art Gallery, which houses the most important public art collection in New South Wales (outside Sydney), or the Cooks Hill Galleries. Learn about Aboriginal culture at the Miromaa Aboriginal Language & Technology Centre. Catch a live performance at the Civic Centre, which was built in the 1920’s and is still in operation today.

Sports

As we’ve already touched on, Newcastle has a vibrant sporting culture and many travel here to visit Hunter Stadium or the Newcastle International Hockey Centre. Those looking for some adventure or family friendly fun should check out Pulse Climbing (an indoor rock climbing experience), Beresfield Golf and FootGolf, TreeTop Adventure Park (outdoor high ropes courses), Newcastle Golf Club and Go Karts Go (biggest track and fastest karts in Newcastle).

Nightlife

Although there are plenty of bars and pubs in Newcastle, you don’t have to be an adult to enjoy the city’s nightlife. Every Saturday night, the Blackbutt Reserve hosts a Spotlight Adventure where visitors can spot some of our nocturnal animals and birds. City Evolutions is an interactive lights display and self-guided walking tour. For something a little different, book yourself onto a Ghost Tour of the East End where you’ll creep around the alleys and historical buildings.

Events

There’s always something happening in Newcastle – why not check out some of the major events and festivals? Some of our favourites include: the Wallsend Winter Fair, Newcastle Food & Wine Expo, Newcastle Jazz Festival, Sydney Comedy Festival, Olive Tree Market (held on the first Saturday of the month), Mattara Festival of Newcastle, Newkulele Festival, Nutri Grain Iron Man Series, Surfest, and the Australian Bowl Riding Championships.

Had visitors stay for Christmas 2013 to save them driving back to Sydney The beds were king singles lovely and comfy for my elderly mother who enjoyed the massage shower and was impressed that it supplied fresh milk for her cuppa She commented on our clean it was and how the owner and staff where so welcoming and friendly, will use again if I have visitors again

The beds were not hard. We did not wake up with a sore back. Very friendly staff and owners. Ensuite was fine, free kettle and toaster hire. There is the option for a delivered breakfast, and a staff member comes to check if you need anything. Bar fridge and LCD TV. It's a budget motel, stop complaining you fools. We will definitely be staying here again!
