Attractions

Many people who choose to stay at the Capricorn Motel & Conference Centre wonder about the attractions and activities in the local area. The good news is that there is something for everyone in Rockhampton, young or old.

Heritage

Whether you’re interested in learning more about Rockhampton or the history of our country as a whole, there are a number of heritage attractions to enjoy. At the Archer Park Rail Museum, see exhibitions associated with the railways and tramways of the region. At the Central Queensland Military Museum, see military artefacts from around the region (such as uniforms). And at the Heritage Village, take a step back in time to see the district during 1850 – 1950.

Nature

If you prefer to go outside and smell the roses, there are plenty of natural attractions to visit during your stay. These include: the Kershaw Gardens (which represent a natural Australian bush environment), Mount Archer National Park, Mount Etna Caves National Park, Rockhampton Botanic Gardens (some of these specimens are over 100 years old!), Fitzroy River (which is popular amongst fishermen), and Great Keppel Island (accessible via air and sea).

Wildlife

But what about the native fauna that Australia is so well known for? There are plenty of opportunities to get up close and personal with some of these creatures. The Koorana Crocodile Park is about half an hour’s drive and is currently home to around 4000 crocodiles. Hatching can be observed from March until May. The Rockhampton Zoo is home to both native and exotic species, and entry is completely free!

Art & Culture

Those who are interested in the art and culture of the region will not be disappointed. In particular, we recommend the Rockhampton Art Gallery (whose artists include Arthur Boyd and Sidney Nolan), the Tropic of Capricorn Spire, Walter Reid Cultural Centre, Dreamtime Cultural Centre, Nob Creek Pottery, Pilbeam Theatre & Art Gallery, and the bull statues around town (which represent the main breeds of the area).

Golf

Don’t mind a game of golf? The Rockhampton Golf Club is definitely worth the visit – Al Howard, probably Australia’s most well known golf course designers, accounted for all variables on the course (including the wind). The course is open to the general public, but only during limited times on Saturdays when Club competitions are being held. If you’re a member of another club with an AGU handicap, you’re welcome to join a competition.

Caves

Located to the north of Rockhampton you will find the spectacular limestone Capricorn Caves. There are a number of tours available, including: the Cathedral Cave Tour (which takes about an hour – night tours can also be arranged!), Geotour (which enables you to explore in and around the caves from a geology standpoint), and Bats and Bones (which is a favourite amongst kids). Adventure caving tours are also available for the daredevils.
