If you have chosen to stay at the River Country Inn, we’re sure that you’ll be interested in the nearby attractions. Fortunately, there are plenty of things to see and do in the Echuca/Moama region.
If there is one thing that the Echuca/Moama area is known for, it’s the historic paddlesteamers that still navigate the waters of the Murray River today. There are currently 9 paddlesteamers calling the area home, including: PS Alexander Arbuthnot, PS Adelaide, PS Pevensey, PS Canberra, Pride of the Murray, PS Emmylou, PS Hero, PS Success and PS Etona. Whilst not all of them are open to the public, you can still see them puttering down the river.
Those looking to get outside and enjoy the fresh air will find no shortage of attractions in the Echuca/Moama area. In particular, we recommend Cactus Country (which is filled with towering cacti – pick up some Mediterranean art to take home), Kyabram Fauna Park (which has the second largest collection of Australian fauna in Victoria) and the Big Strawberry (pick your own strawberries or enjoy a special dessert in the café).
If you’ve got a bit of a competitive streak, there are a number of sports and games in the area for you to try your hand at. In particular, we recommend the Moama RSL Club, Moama Bowling Club, ten pin bowling, paintball (which has over 25 themed fields to enjoy) and golf (there are two local courses – Kyabram Parkland Golf Club and the Rich River Golf Club). If you enjoy racing, head to the Heartland Raceway to watch the cars race around the track.
Those interested in learning a little more about the history of the area will not be disappointed. Visit the Chanter Estate & Military Museum (check out some authentic vehicles that have been used in films and enjoy a wine tasting), Echuca Historical Society Museum, National Holden Motor Museum, and the Port of Echuca Discovery Centre (which houses the restored Echuca Wharf and details the town’s paddlesteamer history – don’t forget to visit the blacksmith!).
If you would prefer to see a show or spend your days wandering through galleries, we recommend that you head to the Alton Gallery (which showcases paintings by local artists and holds an exhibition each October), Whittleshop Studio Gallery (which showcases paintings, sculptures, ceramics, cards, jewellery, felting and more), or the Paramount Cinemas & Performing Arts Centre (for the latest blockbusters and live entertainment).
If you happen to be holidaying when the weather is warm, there are plenty of activities to help you cool down on the mighty Murray River. In particular, we recommend boating, kayaking, wake boarding, waterskiing, kneeboarding, canoeing and swimming. There are plenty of hire companies around town where you can pick up some gear. Kingfisher Cruises will let you sit back and relax as the world passes by – explore the Barmah Choke.
