Attractions

If you have some free time during your stay and want to check out some of Chiltern’s popular attractions, you’ve come to the right place! There are plenty of things to see and do in the region, so enjoy!

Heritage

Are you interested in learning more about the region’s rich history? If so, we recommend checking out Lakeview House, Dows Pharmacy, The Federal Standard, the Athenaeum Museum, Chiltern Court House, Old Chiltern Police Residence & Lockup, The Star Theatre, the Grapevine Museum, Stephen’s Motor Museum, Indigo Pioneer Cemetery, and the Old Chiltern Cemetery. Please note that some of these sites are not open daily or require an appointment.

Gold Mines

The region was actually quite lucrative during the gold rush, and there are still plenty of gold mines around that are open to the public. These include the Magenta Mine (which is said to have yielded around 13,000 ounces of gold over the years), the State Battery Site (which is located on the way to the Magenta Mine, although little now remains), and Chiltern Valley No 1, 2 and 3 (again, little remains of these mines apart from a wetlands).

Nature

If you would prefer to get outside and explore Chiltern’s more natural surrounds, you have plenty of locations to choose from. Some of our favourites include: the Chiltern Tourist Park (which offers BBQ facilities), Martin Park (which offers a children’s playground and BBQ facilities), Lake Anderson, and the Chiltern-Mount Pilot National Park (which is set on more than 20,000 hectares and is home to the Mt Pilot Range and Woolshed Falls).

Local Produce

You cannot pass through the area without stopping to try some the delicious local produce. Pick up some locally sourced meat from the Chiltern Butchery; enjoy some tasty honey from the Chiltern Honey Farm; load up on freshly picked cherries at Hotson’s Cherries; and delight in the vegan wines produced by Lilliput Wines. There are also plenty of delicious eateries to visit, including: The Vine, Mulberry Tree Tea Rooms, Telegraph Hotel and the Ironbark Inn.

Events

The region is actually home to a number of different events throughout the year, so you should definitely check them out if you happen to be in town at the right time. Some of the bigger events include: the Henry Handel Richardson’s Birthday Celebration (a famed Australian author); Chiltern Pro Rodeo (held annually across the Labour Day weekend); Chiltern Cancer Cruise, Car and Bike Show, Chiltern Visual Arts Exhibition, the Annual Vintage Bike Club Rally and Chiltern Antique Fair.

Antiques

If you’re interested in antiques, you might like to explore some of the collectibles stores and auction houses in the local area. In particular, we recommend checking out: Black Dog Antiques & Collectibles, Chiltern Auctions (which is run by licensed dealers), the Chiltern Second-Hand Shop (where you can also pick up wrought iron gates and other outdoor collectibles), Chiltique on Conness, and Grapevine Antiques & Collectibles.
